Starting your HOSA can seem daunting, but it’s easier than you think. Below we’ve laid out a few simple steps to get you on your way!
The first step is to check with your school administrators to find out the policies and rules regarding how to create an after-school “club” at your school. You will require approval from your school before starting a chapter.
The next step to starting a HOSA chapter is to find an advisor. Most of the time this is a health science teacher, but really any faculty advisor to willing to help can be your advisor.
Once a chapter advisor has been confirmed, you will need to recruit at least 5 members to get started. The membership fee for each chapter member is $10 for State dues and $10 for International dues, which adds up to $20 per member per school year, including your local advisor. The local chapter advisor can assess an additional membership fee to be used for the local chapter. We would recommend that you do not overcharge, but you may charge an additional fee of up to $10 per person that the chapter could use for other chapter expenses.
Once you have least 5 paid members, contact your CT State advisor, who will provide you a chapter number and further instructions to help your chapter get started. NOTE: We advice chapters to make sure to collect membership dues before registering the chapter with your state advisor.
Once your school has collected the membership dues, they should make a check payable to HOSA and mail to: HOSA International, 548 Silicon Drive, Suite 101, Southlake, TX 76092 (include the invoice and/or your chapter number with check). The dues cover the academic year August 1st through July 31st.
If you are starting a chapter in the fall, we advise that you create local officer positions and have an election for those positions as soon as possible.
If you are starting a HOSA Chapter in the Spring and for returning chapters, you might consider having Local Officer Elections in the Spring of each year before finals and the end of the school year for the following school year.
CONGRATULATIONS!
